About Us
Matuwa Junior school (MJS), started on February 4th, 2019, as a community school and is an initiative of David Butala in honor of his parents, Charles and Loy Butala. This effort is supported by his siblings Fred Masaba, Joyce Wanda, and Anthony Makwa together with the community, and friends both local and abroad. It is in Butinduyi village, Bupoto sub-county, Namisindwa District in Eastern Uganda.
It is bordered by Bududa District to the north, the republic of Kenya to the east and south, Tororo District to the south-west, and Manafwa District to the west of our nearest city, Mbale. Our parents believed so strongly in educating all of us despite all odds going against them. Many people in our community were not keen on educating children. Though peasants, Mom and Dad did everything possible, including selling pieces of land and cattle to educate us. We used to carry produce to the local markets and across the border to Kenya for sale to supplement school fees sources. For the most part, things were quite difficult but our strong faith in God through daily family prayers enabled us to stay focused and expectant for tuition provision, particularly during the sleepless nights leading to the start of the school year and the subsequent academic terms. We derive our inspiration from these experiences to be the light and support the community can lean on.
Each one of us namely: Mr. Fred Masaba, Mrs. Joyce Wanda, Mr. Anthony Makwa and Mr. David Butala supports growth in one of our competence departments of the (SMC Board). David Butala provides support on Governance and Management aspects, and Mr. Anthony Makwa provides support on Curriculum Development and Review. Mrs. Joyce Wanda provides support on Resource Mobilization aspects, Mr. Fred Masaba provides support on Strategy and Development, and Mrs. Loy Butala provides support on Community building and Mobilization aspects. Members of the SMC/ Board act as a powerful voice for all children and are a relevant resource for families in the surrounding communities. The school management committee and Parents teachers’ association works with relevant groups to address the funding and expenditure needs, and have a legal and professional responsibility to protect the school’s assets.

Message from the founder
Miracles or luck as many will attribute are out of our control but we the people, can and should be in control of what drives our communities. It takes one, two, or more selfless individuals to cause a change in the community. I think that Kindness no matter how small stirs the heart. It goes a long way, often further than we can see, hear or feel. We can be a part of the change we wish to see in our communities. How I wish that for every single breath, we can all live by the golden rule, as life is so harsh at times, although quite often, it’s a harvest.
